Jazz Gaming Competing in NBA 2K League Behind Shaka ‘Compete’ Browne

Original Jazz Gamer Now Provides Veteran Presence in Current Season

SALT LAKE CITY (June 22, 2021) – From Uber driver to NBA 2K League pioneer, Shaka “Compete” Browne has found his place as a veteran with Jazz Gaming.

The first Jazz Gaming player, who was selected third overall at the first league draft in 2018, is an established presence in the lineup at small forward. Browne has started all 10 regular season plus four tournament games with a steady hand on the remote.

This week Jazz Gaming (5-5) will take on two opponents in Kings Guard Gaming (5-5) starting at 5:45 p.m. MT on June 24 and Pacers Gaming (11-3) at 7 p.m. MT on June 26. Both matchups will feature a two-game series. Jazz Gaming is currently in fifth place among 11 teams in the Western Conference.

Jazz Gaming plays remotely from the Zions Bank Jazz Gaming Center on Level 5 of Vivint Arena. Games are simulcast live on the NBA 2K League’s Twitch and YouTube channels.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Mount Vernon, N.Y., Browne has been around the basketball world since he was eight years old and his love has only grown stronger since he began playing NBA 2K in 2006.

“I played basketball, but I was never that good,” Browne said. “I wanted to find something that was in my realm in terms of basketball. I just fell in love with the game and it made me feel like I was a star at basketball when I was playing NBA 2K.”

While on his off days here in Utah, you can find him in the gym or hiking in the Utah mountains, his days back in New York are quite different. In 2016, Browne started working as an Uber driver in New York City. His friendly demeanor and dance moves make him approachable, but once the game consoles turn on, he is locked in which is evident by his username.

“I was searching for a universal gamer tag that would tell people when they read my name that no matter what I am playing, I am going to give it my all,” Browne said. “I felt like the name ‘Yeah I Compete’ would show people right away that I am going to try hard and that I am extremely competitive.”

Over the years, his name transformed from “Yeah I Compete” to just “Compete” which Browne has officially adopted as his username for this season.

Compared to last season, Browne says that this team has faced adversity, but it has only made them stronger. While they continue to find their groove, Browne will continue to lead the team with passion, love for the game and a veteran outlook.
