Jazz Gaming Aims for Breakthrough Season with Five of Six Returning Players
Week 1 of Regular Season Begins vs. Blazer5 Gaming, Lakers Gaming
SALT LAKE CITY (May 24, 2021) – Talk with Jazz Gaming head coach Jelani “Comp” Mitchell and the conversation quickly turns to “breakthrough season” and “championship aspirations” in the NBA 2K League, and rightfully so with five of six returning players.
“We’re super excited,” Mitchell said. “We had a great year last season and we’re working hard every day to improve. We started off with a 5-9 record in Season 1, 8-8 in Season 2, and 14-2 in Season 3. We’re not chasing 16-0 this year, but we’re really looking for improvement to become better shooters, have better gameplay overall and make a better impact in the community.”
Jazz Gaming begins regular season play at 5 p.m. (MT) on Wednesday, May 26 with back-to-back games against Blazer5 Gaming and then hosts Lakers Gaming at 5 p.m. (MT) on Friday, May 28 for a pair of games.
The matchup with Blazer5 Gaming is more of a rematch. In last weekend’s THE TIPOFF tournament, Jazz Gaming lost 78-73 and 77-66 in group play to Blazer5. Jazz Gaming beat Mavs Gaming twice, 79-67 and 81-76, to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record. Jazz Gaming will now have 14 regular-season matchups played in a two-game format, with each game counting in the overall season standings.
Through the four in-season tournament games, point guard Kimanni “Splashy” Ingram of Milwaukee, Wis., is dominating with 24.5 points and 11.8 assists per game while center Spencer “Ria” Wyman of Shoreline, Wash., is anchoring the middle with 17 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.
Alex “Expose” Whelan of Stratford, Conn., is contributing 14.5 points per game with Brent “Lord Beezus” Aasgaard of Houston chipping in 10.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, and Shaka “Compete” Browne of Mount Vernon, N.Y., adding 8.5 points per game in the starting lineup.
